What’s nutritious, sweet, and green all over?! Juliana’s super green smoothie with a touch of body balancing herbs to give it a little extra kick! I’m going to be honest. I used to hate green smoothies. I felt like every time I tried a new one I tasted more greens than “sweetness”, and I would rather grab a chocolate/banana smoothie smothered in peanut butter for lunch than turn to what some people call a “liquid salad”.

Green Smoothie 2

Spinach, kale, chard, spirulina, and any other “green” that could possibly be added to a smoothie was not my first choice when trying to figure out what I wanted in my smoothie, and it wasn’t until just recently that I finally created a recipe that I really do enjoy!

I wanted to find a way to incorporate more greens in to my diet because after all, they are considered alkaline forming foods for the body and have SO many benefits. I was really tired of steaming spinach or kale, and trying to incorporate a salad in to my daily diet (I still enjoy them just not everyday), and I needed something that was packed with nutrients, kept me satisfied, and tasted good all at the same time.

I recently came across spirulina and chlorella. They are two super greens that are known for their multiple benefits for the body.

Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is a freshwater plant that is known for detoxifying the body.

There are multiple benefits that come from consuming spirulina like:

  • Detoxing heavy metals from the body like Arsenic
  • Helping to eliminate Candida (We all want a healthy and happy tummy.)
  • It can improve health related diseases
  • Lowering blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Boosting energy

Chlorella is also a type of fresh water algae and it has amazing benefits as well like:

  • Supporting your immune system
  • Promoting weight loss
  • Making you look younger (who doesn’t want that?)
  • Fighting disease

As you can see, both of these super foods have some pretty amazing benefits, and when paired together, they can do WONDERS for your body. I have been adding a teaspoon of each in my green smoothies once a day and I already feel more energized and my skin has been so clear, which leaves me feeling good about myself from the inside out! At first, I was not a fan… opening a bag of either of those can smell like you’re swimming at the bottom of a lake (which in their defense… is understandable), but I do not enjoy drinking a green smoothie that smells like I have just ordered a fresh plate of sea food! So, I did what all aspiring green smoothie drinkers do, and I added some SWEETNESS to the mix, and something that would mask the taste of these super foods in my drink.

For my super green smoothie, I added:

-3 handfuls of greens (spinach, kale, chard)

-1 tsp of spirulina

-1 tsp of chlorella

-1 frozen banana

-1 cup of frozen pineapple

-1 serving size of ashwagandha (optional)

  • about 28 drops
  • This is good for thyroid function, hormonal balance, and good for anxiety and stress relief.

-1 ½ cups of nut milk/water

  • If you want your smoothie to be thicker, add more liquid.
  • If you want your smoothie to be thinner, add less liquid.

First, I blended the greens and nut milk together to make sure they were completely blended. Then I added my super foods and my body balancing ashwagandha next. After, I blended in my banana and pineapple and THAT’S IT!

This smoothie is crazy delicious and its PACKED with greens! Who would’ve ever guessed that you could have your cake and eat it too? This smoothie is a definite go-to for me, and has been extremely beneficial for my body as I have incorporated more and more in to my daily diet recently. I hope that if you have been trying to incorporate more greens in to your diet, that this smoothie is a major hit for you, and for the people around you. I know it is for me, and my body loves me for it!

Until next time!
